The Procedure
What to expect, step by step
- Step 1
Diagnosis & X-rays
We examine the tooth, test its nerve response and take X-rays to confirm whether the pulp is infected and to map the root canals.
- Step 2
Access & pulp removal
A small opening is made in the tooth and the infected pulp is removed. The canals are then cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
- Step 3
Filling & sealing
The cleaned canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth.
- Step 4
Restoration
The tooth is closed with a filling. For back teeth or heavily damaged teeth we usually recommend a crown to protect against fracture.

Common questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?
The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic and should feel similar to having a filling. Any soreness afterwards is usually mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does a root canal take?
Many front teeth can be treated in a single 60 to 90 minute appointment. Molars with more canals may need one or two visits, depending on the infection.
Will the tooth need a crown afterwards?
Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from cracking. Front teeth may only need a filling if enough healthy tooth structure remains.
What happens if I delay treatment?
Delaying can allow the infection to spread, leading to more pain, swelling and possible tooth loss. Early treatment gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
